Managing Dizziness

Dizziness can hit unexpectedly, making you feel lightheaded, unsteady, or like the room is spinning (called vertigo). It can stem from a drop in blood pressure, dehydration, or even standing up too fast. If you’re dealing with side effects from treatment, illness, or stress, it’s not uncommon to experience dizzy spells. Understanding the cause and how to care for yourself can help you feel more grounded and in control.

What causes dizziness during or after cancer treatment?

  • Dehydration from vomiting, diarrhea, fevers, sweating, or not drinking enough fluids
  • Sudden blood pressure drops, especially when standing quickly
  • Side effects of certain medications or treatments, like some chemotherapies

How can I stay hydrated?

  • Drink a variety of fluids: water, juice, milk, tea, soup, or electrolyte drinks
  • If plain water is hard to drink, try adding a lemon slice or switching to flavored water
  • Choose hydrating foods like watermelon, lettuce, broccoli, popsicles, and yogurt
  • Carry a water bottle and sip throughout the day—don’t wait until you feel thirsty
  • Drink extra fluids when you’re ill, exercising, or outside in hot weather

What can I do to prevent dizziness at home?

  • Change positions slowly. Sit up gradually when getting out of bed. If you feel dizzy standing, use a nearby surface for support
  • Rest and rehydrate. Your body may be asking for a break—listen to it
  • Ask about medication. Your doctor may recommend treatment options to manage ongoing dizziness
